Machining POM (Delrin/Acetal)

POM is the best-machining engineering plastic: stiff, dimensionally stable, and it cuts to clean edges and fine finishes much like brass. When a design needs a plastic part to genuinely tight tolerances, POM is usually the first material we suggest.

Its low friction and fatigue resistance make it the standard for gears, bushings, rollers, cams and snap-fit mechanisms that cycle millions of times. It absorbs very little moisture, so parts hold their size in service.

We hold ±0.05 mm on critical POM features. The main design limits are temperature (continuous use to about 90 °C) and bonding: POM's slippery surface resists glue, so design for mechanical fastening.

Common Grades We Machine

  • Homopolymer (Delrin) - Highest stiffness and strength; the default for precision mechanical parts.
  • Copolymer (POM-C) - Better chemical resistance and less centreline porosity in thick sections.
  • Glass-filled POM - Extra stiffness and creep resistance for loaded parts.

Applications by Industry

  • Automotive - gears, clips, bushings and fuel-system components at production volume.
  • Medical - instrument mechanisms and handles where precision and cleanability matter.
  • Semiconductor - jigs, nests and handling components that must not scratch product.

Surface Finishing Options

  • Machined finish - POM comes off the tool with excellent surfaces; often no finishing needed.
  • Bead blasting - a uniform matte texture where glare or fingerprints matter.
  • Annealing - stress relief before final machining on tight-tolerance or asymmetric parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tolerances can you hold on POM parts?

±0.05 mm on critical features : POM is the most dimensionally cooperative plastic we machine, which is why it's the default for precision plastic mechanisms.

Homopolymer or copolymer?

Homopolymer (Delrin) is stiffer and stronger; copolymer resists chemicals and hot water better and avoids centreline porosity in thick cross-sections. For most precision parts either works; we'll advise from your drawing.

Can POM parts be glued?

Poorly. its low-friction surface resists adhesives. Design for screws, press-fits or snap features instead; POM excels at all three.
