Machining Polypropylene
Polypropylene is the chemistry-lab plastic: excellent resistance to acids and bases, very low moisture absorption, low density, and autoclavable. Wet-bench components, labware, chemical tanks and fluid-handling parts are its home.
PP is soft and springy at the machine; sharp tools, light cuts and patient fixturing keep edges clean and dimensions honest. It also hot-air welds well, which makes fabricated tanks and enclosures practical alongside machined parts.
Machined tolerances of ±0.1 mm are realistic for PP's softness and thermal movement; we design-review tight callouts with you before cutting.
Common Grades We Machine
- PP homopolymer - Stiffest and most chemical-resistant: the standard machining grade.
- PP copolymer - Better impact resistance, especially at low temperatures.
- Natural (unpigmented) PP - The choice for semiconductor wet-process and high-purity applications.
Applications by Industry
- Semiconductor - wet-bench fixtures, chemical-handling components and carriers.
- Medical - autoclavable labware and fluid-path components.
Surface Finishing Options
- Machined finish - PP is used as machined; coatings do not adhere.
- Hot-air welding - fabricated tanks and enclosures combined with machined details.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I pick PP over PVC or HDPE?
PP takes higher temperatures than both, autoclaves, and matches their chemical resistance at similar cost; it's the default for lab and wet-process parts that see heat or sterilization.
Can PP parts be glued?
Not reliably. like polyethylene, nothing bonds well to it. Design for mechanical fastening or hot-air welding, both of which work excellently.
Why are PP tolerances looser than POM's?
PP is softer and moves more with temperature; it cannot hold precision-plastic tolerances in service. ±0.1 mm is honest; we'll flag any callout that fights the material.
