Machining Polyethylene
Polyethylene spans two useful characters: HDPE, the economical, chemical-proof general-purpose plastic; and UHMW-PE, whose enormous molecular weight gives it outstanding abrasion resistance and impact toughness: it outwears steel in sliding abrasion applications.
Both machine easily but softly: sharp tools, light clamping and good chip clearance keep edges clean. Like PTFE, polyethylene moves with temperature and creeps under sustained load, so we tolerance it to the material's honest behaviour rather than promising numbers it cannot hold in service.
Typical machined tolerances are ±0.1 mm; UHMW wear parts are usually designed with clearance rather than precision fits, and we advise on that trade-off at the drawing stage.

- UHMW-PE - Extreme abrasion resistance and impact toughness: wear strips, chain guides, star wheels and liners.

Surface Finishing Options

Frequently Asked Questions
HDPE or UHMW: which do I need?
HDPE for economical chemical-resistant parts without heavy wear; UHMW wherever sliding abrasion or impact dominates: its wear life in those roles is in a different class.
Why can't polyethylene hold very tight tolerances?
It is soft, creeps under load, and expands with temperature roughly ten times more than steel. Designs that need PE's properties work best with clearance fits; we'll flag any feature where the tolerance fights the material.
Can polyethylene parts be glued or painted?
Effectively no. nothing bonds well to PE. Design for mechanical fastening; that limitation is the flip side of its excellent chemical resistance.
