Machining Nylon

Nylon is the tough one: it absorbs impact and abrasion that would crack harder plastics, which makes it the choice for gears, sprockets, wear pads, rollers and sheaves in punishing service.

Its trade-off is moisture: nylon absorbs water and grows, up to a few percent dimensionally when saturated. We machine to the drawing with that behaviour in mind, and for tight-tolerance parts we discuss the service environment before cutting, or steer the design to cast PA6 or a filled grade.

Nylon machines well with sharp tooling; we hold ±0.05 mm on critical features at machining time, with moisture-conditioning guidance for parts where in-service size matters.

Common Grades We Machine

  • PA66 - Higher strength, stiffness and temperature resistance; the standard extruded machining grade.
  • Cast PA6 - Large cross-sections with low internal stress: big gears, sheaves and thick wear parts.
  • Oil-filled / MoS2-filled nylon - Built-in lubrication for bearings and wear parts that can't be greased.
  • Glass-filled nylon - Roughly double the stiffness with much lower creep for loaded structural parts.

Applications by Industry

  • Automotive - gears, guides, rollers and wear strips in assembly and conveyor systems.
  • Oil & Gas - wear pads, bushings and seals-adjacent components in handling equipment.

Surface Finishing Options

  • Machined finish - clean surfaces off the tool for most industrial parts.
  • Annealing - stress relief for thick or asymmetric parts before final machining.
  • Moisture conditioning - pre-conditioning to service humidity where in-use dimensions are critical.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does moisture affect nylon part dimensions?

Nylon absorbs water and can grow noticeably from dry to saturated. We machine to drawing and advise on conditioning; if in-service dimensional stability is critical, POM or a glass-filled grade may serve better.

When should I choose nylon over POM?

When toughness and abrasion resistance beat precision: nylon shrugs off impact and wear that chips harder plastics. When tight, stable dimensions rule, choose POM.

What's the advantage of cast PA6?

Large blocks and rounds with low internal stress, so big machined parts (large gears, sheaves, thick pads) stay flat and stable.
