Machining ABS
ABS is the prototyping workhorse: economical, tough enough for handling, and easy to machine, bond, paint and vapor-smooth. When a design team needs housings that look and feel like production injection-moulded parts, machined ABS is the fastest honest route.
It cuts cleanly at moderate speeds with sharp tooling; thin walls and snap features machine well. Unlike many engineering plastics, ABS glues superbly with common solvents and adhesives, so multi-part bonded assemblies are practical.
We hold ±0.05 mm on critical ABS features (more precision than most enclosure work needs) and can deliver painted, textured or bonded assemblies through our finishing chain.
Common Grades We Machine
- Machine-grade ABS - The standard for machined prototypes and low-volume enclosures.
- Flame-retardant ABS (UL94 V-0) - For enclosures with electrical compliance requirements.
Applications by Industry
- Automotive - interior trim prototypes, brackets and housing mock-ups ahead of tooling.
- Medical - device enclosure prototypes and ergonomic studies before moulding.
Surface Finishing Options
- Painting - primed and painted to production cosmetic standards.
- Bead blasting - a uniform matte texture that mimics moulded surfaces.
- Solvent bonding - near-invisible joints for multi-part enclosures.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why machine ABS instead of 3D printing a prototype?
Machined ABS is the actual production material with isotropic strength and moulded-like surfaces, so snap fits, threads and paint behave the way the injection-moulded part will.
Can you match a moulded surface texture?
Bead blasting produces a uniform matte close to common mould textures, and painting to a cosmetic spec covers the rest.
Is machined ABS strong enough for functional testing?
For most enclosure and mechanism testing, yes, and where more temperature or stiffness is needed we can step the same geometry up to PC or POM.
