Machining Titanium
Titanium demands respect at the machine: it conducts heat poorly, so cutting heat concentrates in the tool edge instead of the chip, and it springs back elastically against the cut. The recipe is low speeds, high feeds, rigid setups, flood coolant and sharp tooling: get any of it wrong and tool life collapses.
The reward is a material half the weight of steel with comparable strength, essentially immune to corrosion, and biocompatible. That combination is why titanium owns critical structural applications and surgical implants despite the machining cost.
We machine Grade 2 and Ti-6Al-4V routinely, hold ±0.025 mm on critical features, and ship every titanium part with mill certificates and full traceability, which is non-negotiable in the industries that specify it.
Common Grades We Machine
- Grade 2 (commercially pure) - Best corrosion resistance and formability: chemical process and marine parts where strength demands are moderate.
- Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) - The workhorse alloy: high strength-to-weight for structural applications and rotating parts.
- Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23) - Extra-low interstitial variant with better fracture toughness; the standard for implants.

Why does titanium machining cost more than steel or aluminium?
Cutting speeds are a fraction of aluminium's and tool wear is far higher, so machine time dominates the part cost. Design effort that reduces machined volume pays back quickly in titanium.
Which titanium grade do I need?
Grade 2 for corrosion resistance at moderate strength, Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) for high-strength structural parts, Grade 23 ELI for implants. We supply mill certificates for all of them.
